Double’s dread

(2, 3 or 4 players from 12 yo)

MATERIAL

- a board representing the monster of the lagoon

- in 4 different colors, 6 pawns with 1 to 6 harpoons, + a Shaman pawn (represented by a circle , value 7) and a Chief (represented by a double circle, value 8).

In each color there are 2 magic coloured pawns.

- 5 barks of 8 squares

THEME

The monster of the depths arbitrates a contest about the monopoly of fishing in the lagoon.

SPREAD OF THE BARKS

The winner of the auction settles on the south side (the head of the monster on his left).

Then he puts a bark in south, west, north and east.

When there are 2 players, he will play with the barks in south and north, his opponent will play with the barks in east and west.

When there are 3 players, South plays with South and North, against a player in east and a player in west.

HOW TO PLAY

The game consists on 8 tricks.

PURPOSE OF THE GAME

to pick up most points, by capturing most pawns.

RULE FOR 2 OR 3 PLAYERS

SET UP

The pawns are put at random on the squares of 4 barks ( in this variant, the 5th bark is not used)

AUCTIONS

to get the most competitive barks, the players participate in one or several rounds of betting.

The minimal auction is 33 points, the maximal 64.

You can go on participating in a round if you have participated in the previous one.

The winner of the auction spreads the barks between the players.

THE TRICKS

South decides who plays first in the first trick.

Each player clockwise puts on the monster a pawn in the color of the first played one.

If the player cannot follow this color, there are 2 solutions :

-either he puts a pawn of the same force in an other color : in this case the monster swallows the previous pawns (they are turned on their blind face) , and the new color becomes the required color for the rest of the trick

- or he discards a pawn of a different force ;

this discarded pawn is directly swallowed by the monster.

The player who has put the strongest pawn in the required color wins the trick.

He takes the not swallowed pawns and line them in front of himself, beside the board.

The swallowed pawns will be returned by the monster to the winner of the last trick.

END OF A ROUND

The winner of the last trick gets back all the pawns swallowed by the monster.

Each player counts 1 point for each ordinary pawn, and 5 points for each magic point.

South must reach or exceed his auction ; in this case, he score all the points he has won.

If he does not reach his auction, he scores no point, and his opponent(s) score(s) their own points + the auction of south.

Examples :

in a game for 3 players, the auction of South was 42, and he made only 36 ; East made 12 and West 16 ; East scores 12 + 42 and West 16 + 42.

VARIANT FOR 4 PLAYERS

The 5 barks are used, with 6 pawns in each bark, the last 2 pawns being returned on the body of the monster.

The minimum auction is 27.

The winner of the auction keeps 2 barks for himself, putting one of them either between West and North, or between North and East.

So there will be 5 pawns played in each trick, South playing with 2 barks, and getting the gains of both.

GAMES IN SEVERAL ROUNDS

It is advisable to play as many rounds as there are players : so each one would be in case of initiating the auction

The winner on the trick

-either initiates the next trick with a pawn of the winning bark

- or designates the next bark to initiate the trick.
