KHAN TSIN

How to play

2 or 3 players from 8 years old, +-10 minutes

THEME

A mythical China divided into 36 fiefs, three clans of Khans face each other for the title of Khan-Tsin.

Be the first to bring your Khan high enough to become unreachable.

GOAL OF THE GAME

To promote your Khan to the rank of Khan-Tsin, by placing it on top of a pile of 9 pawns built with 3 pawns of each color.

COMPONENTS

- A board with 36 single, double or triple squares, shaped like a dragon.

- 36 pawns, in 3 different colors ; each color has 12 pawns including a Khan-pawn.

SET UP FOR A 2 PLAYER GAME

Both player choose a Khan-pawn that will determine their color and then place all the pawns of their color (including the Khan-pawn) on the track, each in turn, and in the following order :

- 4 pawns on 4 triple squares.

- 4 pawns on 4 double squares.

- 4 pawns on 4 single squares.

The 12 pawns of the third (unchosen) color are placed on the remaining free squares, turning their Khan-pawn face down.

SET UP FOR A 3 PLAYER GAME

Each player choose a Khan-pawn that will determine their color and then place all the pawns of their color (including the Khan-pawn) on the track, each in turn, and in the following order :

- 4 pawns on 4 triple squares.

- 4 pawns on 4 double squares.

- 4 pawns on 4 single squares.

MOVES

The player with the lightest color starts to play (lighter to darker : white - green - blue)

Each player in turn moves a pawn of their color to land on another pawn or stack of pawns.

The pawns move according to the value of their starting square :

- When a player move a pawn or a stack of pawns from a single square, the pawn or stack of pawns will land on the next pawn or stack of pawns on its left or on its right.

- From a double square, you must move to a square two pawns or stack of pawns further.

- From a triple square, it is obligatory to land on a square three pawns or stack of pawns further away.

So you jump directly from occupied square to occupied square over the empty squares.

Since the dragon can bite its own tail, you jump directly from one end of the track to the other, as if they were joined.

A pawn at the top of a stack can move on its own, or take all or part of the stack under with it.

In a two players game, pawns of the unchosen color can only be moved if they are "taken" inside a stack controlled by a pawn of one of the other two colors.

FORBIDDEN MOVES

- A stack can not contain more than 3 pawns of the same color. Any move leading to this result is forbidden.

- The Khan-pawns can not be covered by any other pawns.

- If a player can not move any of their own color pawns, they must skip their turn.

END OF THE GAME

The game is won by the first player to place their Khan-pawn on top of a stack of 9 containing 3 pawns of each color.

NB : A stack of 9 pawns that is not topped by a Khan-pawn does not end the game.
